The Bilby, also known as the Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis), is a small to medium-sized marsupial native to Australia. These unique and endearing creatures are well-known for their distinctive appearance and important ecological role in the Australian desert ecosystems. Unfortunately, they are also classified as a vulnerable species, facing significant threats to their survival.

Here are some key characteristics and facts about Bilby:

  1. Appearance: Bilbies have a rabbit-like appearance with long ears, a slender snout, and a hairless tail that resembles a large, feathered brush. Their fur color varies from pale blue-grey to tan, and their long ears help them regulate body temperature in the desert environment.
  2. Nocturnal: Like many desert-dwelling animals, Bilbies are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night. They spend the day in burrows to escape the heat and come out at night to forage for food.
  3. Habitat: Historically, Bilbies were found across much of mainland Australia, but their distribution has significantly declined due to habitat loss and introduced predators. They are now mainly found in arid and semi-arid regions of central and Western Australia.
  4. Diet: Bilbies are omnivores with a diverse diet. They primarily feed on insects and their larvae, such as ants, termites, and beetles. They also eat seeds, fruit, fungi, and small vertebrates like lizards and small mammals when the opportunity arises.
  5. Burrowing behaviour: Bilbies are excellent diggers and use their strong front claws to create extensive burrow systems, which serve as shelter from predators and extreme weather conditions. These burrows can be quite complex, with multiple entrances and interconnected tunnels.
  6. Reproduction: Bilbies are marsupials, which means they give birth to relatively undeveloped young that continue to develop outside the womb in a pouch. The female Bilby usually gives birth to one or two tiny, underdeveloped young called "joeys." The joey spends around 75 days in the mother's pouch, after which it stays in the burrow and continues to nurse and grow until it is mature enough to venture outside.
  7. Conservation status: The Bilby is classified as a vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The primary threats to their population include habitat destruction due to land clearing for agriculture, competition with introduced species like rabbits and feral cats, and predation by invasive species.

Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and conserve Bilby populations. Some initiatives include establishing Bilby populations in predator-proof enclosures and raising awareness about their ecological importance. Additionally, Bilbies have become an iconic symbol of Easter in Australia, with chocolate bilbies being sold as an alternative to chocolate Easter bunnies, with proceeds often going towards conservation efforts.

I bought the stickers as a gift for the new nursery. I am told that the recipient is delighted, but they are not yet on the wall as the walls have only just been painted.
